I didn’t write any Beach Knight today. Instead, I prepped and wrote lore for a D&D game I’m about to run. I use the same world for my D&D games and my books, so it helps out regardless.
It struck me today just how many people groups I’m inventing. How many nations and wars and continents, races and kingdoms and lords. I’m not really much of a High Fantasy guy. The world events aren’t really what I’m into, but creating workable settings to my own satisfaction has necessitated a lot of invention.
Sucks that it all only lives inside my brain, and I’m a guy who is easily confused and forgets stuff a lot. I do try writing it down, but I’m not very organized. I have important timeline details and names scratched on the bottoms of other, nearly unrelated documents.
I should probably work toward being more organized, especially if I want to keep writing in this world after The Kingdom’s Disdain is fully over.
That might be my next big, boring project.
If it’s raining where you are, enjoy the rain!
Today’s writing tip: Always know more than you tell your reader. If you expose every detail of your worldbuilding and show your hand, your world may seem small and hollow. Let there always be more. Maintain the unknown.
