Mindless Musing About Skeletons

2/10/26

In Book 1 of The Kingdom’s Disdain, I introduce Mad Crossbones and his minions, a small militia of moving skeletons whom the protagonist, Cardinal, begins to refer to as “The Bone Boys”. Bone Boys continue to be a mainstay of the story for as long as Mad Crossbones is present. As soon as I began drafting a fantasy series, I knew there needed to be skeletons in it.

I like skeletons. When I was a kid, I was always pretending to be a skeleton. I used to constantly pester my mom and ask her if I could pretend to be a skeleton.

Skeletons will always have a place in my stories. They need to be there.

They serve a double purpose. On the one hand, they are ominous and visually striking reminders of mortality. On the other hand, they are fun little guys.

To all of my fellow skeletons wearing flesh.

Today’s writing tip: Write when you don’t have anything to say. Try it. Do it. See what happens.
