Chapter 8 is off to a good start. It’s definitely a departure from the tone of the rest of the book, but I love departing from my tone, it creates a good sense of contrast in the world. If I try to make the first section sound more down-to-earth and realistic, the goofy elements from the previous chapters will just feel all that more goofy, and I want that. I want to emphasize all the different colors and flavors.
One thing that keeps coming up is the names of different garments. Since this is set in a vaguely medieval world, I keep having to look up the different clothing pieces they might wear and what they were called. So today, I learned about the ‘chemise’ and the ‘thawb’. To be fair, I didn’t learn a LOT about them. I’ll be doing more of that in the redraft. I want to make sure I’m not disrespectfully using any garments that have a specific attachment to religious practice or anything like that.
Next time, I’ll write a story where every character just wears a T-shirt and jeans.
Today’s writing tip: Check your text to make sure you aren’t repeating the same word too many times. Too much repetition can take a reader out of it. It also sounds sloppy.
