Another good writing day. I expanded what I originally imagined to be a small scene into a full thousand word segment, and it really worked both comedically and for the characters. At the current rate, Beach Knight is probably going to come out somewhere between 100k and 120k words, like a real fantasy book, longer than Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone or Jim Butcher’s Storm Front. That’s fairly exciting for me, since I’ve mostly been writing shorts for the past few years. I think all the drilling is really paying off. I just hope I can keep this enthusiasm going.
I do worry that I’m doing too much though. Everything feels right and I’m progressing in a lot of ways, but sometimes when I focus on too many separate things my internal economy can collapse. I’m praying that what I’ve built is sustainable.
I’m writing. I’m running D&D. I’m going on walks. Drinking a lot of water, and progressing through some videogames at a consistent rate (I hate building up a gaming backlog). When you have depression like I do, sometimes doing the things you enjoy can also feel like a chore, so I’m checking off “Play videogames” and “Watch anime” the same way I would “Vacuum the rug” and I’m sure that seems pretty funny from the outside.
I’m going to go check “Watch pointless youtube” off my list. Bye!
Today’s writing tip: Listen to the way people around you talk. Internalize their speech patterns. This will help you when you need to find voices for your characters.
