Well, it looks like the waiting room at the dentist’s office is the perfect place to get writing done. I drilled through a quick thousand words today while I was waiting for my wife. The scene I’m writing is going on longer than expected. I planned for a quick info dump with some jokes thrown in, but instead it’s a long back and forth dialogue. We’ll see how much it changes in the second draft. I often expect to make a lot of changes in my second draft, but end up liking a lot of what I already have.
One thing I might try to approach differently is the dialogue. I want all of the characters to have extremely distinct voices, so I’ll probably give them noticeable speech quirks, repeated phrases and such. This is the first volume of Beach Knight, so I really want the main three characters to hit home. I want them to feel memorable, iconic.
Anyway, that’s all going into my second draft. I’m still finishing my first draft, which clearly has taken longer than I expected, but I think it will be worth it in the end.
How do you give your characters distinct voices?
Today’s writing tip: When you get stuck, outline. After that, outline some more.
