I didn’t really write today, I’m visiting a friend out of town, but I did finish chapter 5, and I’m excited to get into the meat of chapter 6.
Saw a movie, M3GAN 2.0, and it was really good. I love horror and slasher movies, and I love when a villain gets rebranded as a hero. That’s actually something I really like doing in my own stories. Factions and motivations can be circumstantial, so it’s fun to see what characters might end up doing if the situation changes up. Real life conflicts are rarely as simple as “All the good guys are on the good team and all the bad guys are on the bad team.”
There’s a lot of focus on redemption arcs in modern media criticism, and while some of those can hit really hard, I find it more believable when characters swap alliances due to circumstantial changes and new information. That’s more interesting to me than conversations about karma or forgiveness. I’d rather see the potential good in everyone, even my characters.
What about you? Do you think villains should get the chance to be heroes?
Today’s writing tip: If you have a thought that no one else shares, be sure to put it in your writing. New ideas are free original content.
