Do Something Besides Writing

Creator Journals 6/26/25

Do something besides writing. Find a passion that doesn’t hinge on narrative or fiction. GO have fun. I’m stuck here in this computer revising.

I’m dragging my feet a bit revising some of my latest chapters. I’m trying to bring them from draft 0 (misspellings, sections skipped over, characters talking the same as each other) to draft 1 (I can show it to a close group of friends without feeling immense shame) but I’d rather just be writing new words. Revising has never really been my favorite part of the process. On the plus side, I like how a lot of my newer side-characters are turning out. If all goes to plan and I write a bunch of sequels, many of them will gradually step into more central roles.

Today, a friend mentioned the fact that many of the classic authors had real life adventures. They traveled, taught college courses etc. I think on some level, a lot of modern authors suffer from a lack of real life experience. If all we do is read stories, watch TV, write stories, wash and repeat we just end up writing stories about stories. Stories about stories about stories about stories. You can see this lack in a lot of modern media. So many modern narratives are about nothing but eschewing the virtues of narrative. So many parodies are parodying existing parodies. Just stop. Do something real. Write about something real.
Life experience matters. Maybe I’ll talk about this more tomorrow.

Anyway, go do something crazy!

Today’s writing tip: If a sentence sounds bad, cut it off and throw it in the fire!

Processing…
Success! You're on the list.
