Hi, I’m author, food adventurer and slasher movie fan Paul Lang, and this is my daily blog.
A few years ago, when I was going through a really hard time, I used to have recurring dreams about spiders. Now, I don’t have any inherent fear of spiders, I think the way they move is kind of weird, and I don’t like being poisoned, but I’m not like afraid of them or anything. They just started becoming a weird symbol because of my dreams. One particular dream that stuck out in my memory went thusly.
I was the owner of an extraordinarily large pig, like, this pig was the size of a small refrigerator. I was under attack by an even more gigantic spider, however, the spider was wounded and only had four legs. The bug leapt from the top of a small stone building in an attempt to catch and eat the gigantic ham. However, the pig pulled back, and the giant spider’s jump was just short, so, the spider jumped back to the top of its stone haunt, then, it leapt down again, repeating the exact motion and, like recycled animation, the pig dodged. This image repeated itself at least a dozen times, and I knew that in this dream I was seeing a picture of some kind of eternal struggle.
I don’t know what this dream meant, but it felt important. For a long while, I kept noticing spiders everywhere I went, and it started to feel like some kind of strange, symbolic narrative; an underlying bad omen that heralded a great fall. I’ve had some great falls in my life since then, that’s for sure. Last year, however, team Eternal Pig got a win.
I was working a temp job cleaning the grounds at a college campus, and I was assigned to clean an old, historical chapel. When I went to clean it, I found that it was covered in spider webs, so I took a bottle of multipurpose cleaner, a rag and a mop, and I cleaned all the spiders off the church. When I came back the next day, new spiders had already taken up residence in the windows, in the doorway and under the pews, so I did the same thing again. I did this same task day after day for nearly two months, and I haven’t had a spider dream since.
